I would suggest that you talk with the guides and park personnel first. I did enjoy leaving the trail at first. It was possible to get close to the waterfall. Walking on the slate could be dangerous. Read what the others have said as their answer cover all nine yards of the issue. Bring a camera and travel with somebody. This is not solo hiking territory for many visitors. No need to pretend that you are extra heroic.
