Most of the accom in Geraldton are good - not like the Gold Coast but comfortable. Geraldton is not a big town and the Memorial is easy to get to from anywhere in town. Good Luck.
I'm coming in from a cruise ship for a few hours and would love to do the free tour of the HMAS Sydney. Obviously I won't have a car but is there somewhere near to the port to join in on a free tour that takes you there or is it best to take a taxi and find your own way there and hopefully there will be a tour guide up at the memorial that you can join in with? I would also like to add the locals at Geraldton were well organised and very obliging. They had organised a shuttle service and locals scattered around the town to help us. I have very fond memories of my visit to Geraldton

The memorial is in Gummer Avenue in Geraldton. It can be seen from almost anywhere in Geraldton. We decided to drive up the day we were there as it was very hot. Plenty of parking. The memorial is definitely a must see. Spend a bit of time as the plaques give an interesting insight and the view is spectacular.
