When I took the cruise recently we had to keep socially distanced and had to wear a mask on board but if we were away from people we could take it off for a short time. We pretty much wore them the whole time. The boat is only 25% filled so you will be on the boat with only about 30 people or at least we were on the 11:00am cruise but it is worth the trouble because it is a beautiful trip and on a sunny day, it is just breathtaking especially as the leaves change colors. Just bring a jacket and water.

Sorry, just saw this question. It is a long way from NYC (2 hours by car?) The departure point is in Kinston, NY. Maybe Metro North railroad from Grand Central terminal has service.
