The road can be very bumpy, and I would not want to drive it with a small city car. I would recommend a car with more ground clearance (I had a Duster). You need to drive carefully …

The road can be very bumpy, and I would not want to drive it with a small city car. I would recommend a car with more ground clearance (I had a Duster). You need to drive carefully and plan in enough time, because the going will be slow. You may need to get close to the drop to see puffins, if so, I would recommend getting down on your stomach to be safe. I saw thousands of puffins in Iceland on a boat tour to Drangey Island in the North, so if you go past there on your itinerary, that might be an alternative, since exploring the Westfjords really requires a 3-4 day detour.

I was actually there in mid-April of last year (2016). I think I caught the very beginning of the puffin season.
