How is the falls during winter December? is the water frozen? what about the path, would mere walking cleats sufficient?

As I was there in September I can only speculate that it would be very wintery and quite possibly frozen but the path is a well-maintained one with gripper matting on the main path. The little tracks accessing the falls could be challenging and I would advise well-cleated boots and walking poles to aid your balance.

It’s a bit of a trek with a moderate gradient for 2 kms from the Skaftafell Visitor Centre but well worth the effort. Not my favourite Icelandic waterfall (that would be Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss or Stjórnarfoss) but Svartifoss would go well as an afternoon activity after doing an ice cave and glacier walk in the morning. Crampons advised if icy and much better to buy these in the UK than in Iceland - you can buy Pawaca Universal Anti-Slip Shoes Ice Gripper on Amazon for only £5.99. I would allow an hour if you aren’t a great walker.
