We plan to stay in Albuquerque and visit Trinity site on Sat Oct 6, 2019. I have heard that the entry gate to the Trinity site is 120 miles from Albuquerque, and a lady at the visitors bureau in Albuquerque says it takes 3-5 hours to make the drive. Which gate do we line up at, and how long does the drive from Albuquerque take? Do we have to be at the gate by 8 am or are there multiple caravans that are escorted to the Trinity site? I have heard that the site is open until 2 pm. Do we have to all leave in a caravan, or can we leave when we are done looking?

There was no traffic early in the morning. Be sure to stop in a town and use the bathroom before you get all the way down there. And take some drinks in a cooler.

I arrived at 7:15 am after a 1.5 hour drive from Albuquerque and found about 75 cars ahead of me. The gate opened on time and after a basic security screening (checking photo ID, verifying no weapons in my car), I was driving onto the site around 8:15. There’s no need to arrive super early.
