Elrond was a distant relative of Aragorn, being the brother of his ancestor, Elros. While incredibly rare in J.R.R. Tolkien's world, elves and humans did occasionally fall in love and have children.

Not only does Beren and Lúthien's relationship parallel Aragorn's love for Arwen (Liv Tyler) in The Lord of the Rings, but it is also an important chapter of the story of the Silmarils.
