Revill provided the voice for the evil Palpatine in “Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back,” which was released in 1980. Palpatine was physically played by another actor in the film. Revill’s voice was replaced in subsequent Star Wars movies and in the rereleases of “The Empire Strikes Back” over the years.

But Palpatine’s voice — cool, crisp and commanding — belonged to Clive Revill, who in about 60 seconds set the stage for one of the most feared and infamous characters in science fiction.
