HAYWARD, Calif. - The rain pounded down throughout the Bay Area on Thursday, causing standing water to pool on highways. Before sunrise, there was flooding on westbound Interstate Highway 580 in Hayward at Redwood Road. Caltrans crews were seen working hard, trying to drain the area before the sun came up.

People are being advised to keep warm coats and umbrellas on hand as the Bay Area's frigid temperatures will merge with a pair of windy, rainy storms that are expected to arrive later this week.

The atmospheric river, which gained momentum, soaked the Bay Area on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service forecast for the greater San Francisco Bay Area for today calls for up to an 80 percent chance of precipitation before sunset, and up to 100 percent chance of heavy rain at night.
