Google on Monday began confronting an existential threat as the U.S. government tries to break up the company as punishment for turning its revolutionary search engine into a ruthless monopoly.

The judge who found that the tech company maintained an illegal monopoly is asked to force it to sell its Chrome web browser.

The Justice Department has suggested U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta should order the divestiture of Google Chrome, and potentially Android, to open the internet search market to competition.
