The Eastern Island is now littered with tiny fragments of plastic. The birds die and decay, but the plastic inside them stays forever in the sand -- a layer of man's doing that will never go away.

Yet the desolate Pacific island is one of the densest hubs of plastic pollution on the planet. Its sandy shores are carpeted with an estimated 37.7 million pieces of plastic debris, new findings show.
