Step through the entrance door and up the spiral staircase to learn how the Castle, built by the 2nd Earl of Mar in 1628, transformed from a strategically positioned hunting lodge to an austere redcoat military garrison after the Jacobite risings, and finally became a high society retreat with royal connections throughout the 19th and 20th century.

A grand dining room, gracious drawing room, Victorian bathrooms and delightful morning room and with 12 rooms on show there is plenty to see and discover in this compact castle. An L shaped tower house, it has an unusual right winding spiral stone staircase leading to 3 floors of furnished rooms.

The building is a five-storey L-plan castle with a star-shaped curtain wall of six sharp-angled salients, and with three storey angle turrets. The central tower enfolds a round stair tower and is built of granite covered with harl. The main entrance retains an original iron yett, and many of the windows are protected by heavy iron grilles.

Braemar Castle is a tall, five storeyed turreted house of the L-plan, measuring 51 feet by 47 feet, with a large round stair tower in the re-entrant angle. It was built in 1628, burned in 1689, and remained a ruin until 1748 when it was leased and garrisoned by the Government after the erection of the rectangular curtain wall.

Its star-shaped defenses, Burrow-Esque five floors of architecture (magic affectionados, anyone?), and stark facade hide an interesting history dotted with significant events and highlights.

The castles are situated in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, on the Victorian Heritage and Castle Trails, amid spectacular mountain scenery. Enjoy walking, cycling, climbing and fishing or a round of golf at Scotland's highest course.
