In ancient Egypt, masks were primarily used for two purposes: as death masks and as ritual masks. Ancient Egyptians believed that it is very important to preserve a body of the dead because the soul has to have a place where to dwell after the death.

While Tutankhamun's funerary mask is the most famous funerary mask from Ancient Egypt, a couple of other funerary masks have been found that have escaped destruction from tomb robbers. The funerary masks of Den, Hor Awibre, Psusennes I, Amenemope and Shoshenq II have been found intact.

The death mask of Tutankhamun is considered one of the masterpieces of Egyptian art. The head is covered by the royal headdress and the forehead bears the emblems of kingship and protection: the vulture and uraeus.
