The Spanish Mustang is an American horse breed descended from horses brought from Spain during the early conquest of the Americas. They are classified within the larger grouping of the Colonial Spanish horse, a type that today is rare in Spain. [1]

The Spanish Mustang is a smooth muscled horse with a short back, rounded rump and low tail set. Coupling is smooth and the overall appearance is of a balanced, well built horse. The girth is deep, with a laid back shoulder and fairly pronounced withers.

The Spanish Mustang helped shape the USA as we know it. Descended from the horse of the Conquistadors, Indian buffalo hunters and war ponies, to wild horse of the West, this breed has a rich and illustrious history that forms an important part of our American Heritage.

So, what is a Spanish Mustang? How did they get here? Where did they come from? The true Spanish Mustangs, which are relatively few in number, are directly related genetically to the horse that Columbus brought over on his second voyage in 1493.

The Spanish Mustang is a medium sized horse, ranging from 13 2 to 15 hands with an average size of about 14 2 with proportional weight. They are smooth muscled with short backs, rounded rumps and low set tails.

With funding from government sources, foundations and contributions from the general public, the Spanish Mustang Foundation seeks to promote understanding and protection for this deserving American horse. The Spanish Mustang is not to be confused with the BLM Mustang.
