2016年10月24日 · Thank you for your reply Stacy, but these .doc files are not an Outlook attachment - the files are in shared folders on our file server. Most are years old (date back to mid 1990's) and we had no problem opening them prior to the WOrd 2016 update.

It is only truly available for documents saved by Word in .doc mode (or to some extent in Word2010 compatibility mode. In later file versions you get some things but is distorted or discolored. But I now have a .doc file (apparently created in 2000) where attempts to open it result in a File Conversion dialog box saying 'Select the encoding that makes your document readable'.
