Born in Great Barrington, MA, and raised in California and Arizona, after graduating from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles in 1970, Magadini pursued commercial illustration in Stockholm, Sweden.

After receiving a full fellowship to Syracuse University, Magadini came east to earn a M.F.A. degree.
