Females often have darker brown feathers around the rim of the facial disc as well as darker bars on the tail and small black spots on the chest and underside of the wings. Males are generally lighter and a more pure white underneath.

The Barn Owl's species name, Tyto alba, literally means "white owl." But behind this unremarkable name is an extraordinary predator with long legs and a distinctive heart-shaped face. Barn Owls are found around the world and tend to nest close to human habitations, giving rise to a variety of folk names.

The Barn Owl’s heart-shaped face, or ‘facial disk’, collects and directs sound toward the inner ears. The ear openings are situated inside the facial disk just behind the eyes. They are shaped differently and placed asymmetrically, one higher than the other.
