The IUPAC name for CH 3 -O-CH 3 is methoxymethane and for CH 3 –O–CH 2 -CH 2 -CH 3 is 1-methoxypropane. For CH 3 –O–CH 2 -CH 2 -CH 3, the longer carbon chain on the right side of the oxygen is considered the base name and the shorter carbon chain on the left side of the oxygen is considered the substituent.

Each alkyl group on each side of the oxygen is numbered separately. The numbering priority is given to the carbon closest to the oxgen. The alkoxy side (shorter side) has an "-oxy" ending with its corresponding alkyl group. For example, CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 -O-CH 2 CH 2 CH 3 is 1-propoxypentane.
