1.8: Ethers - Chemistry LibreTexts
In organic chemistry, any alkyl group can be abbreviated as R. An ether, in which the carbons of two alkyl groups are linked to the same oxygen, can be abbreviated as R-O-R. This molecule is often referred to simply as “ether”. Its common name is diethyl ether, and its IUPAC name is …
9.10: Ethers - Chemistry LibreTexts
The IUPAC name for CH 3 -O-CH 3 is methoxymethane and for CH 3 –O–CH 2 -CH 2 -CH 3 is 1-methoxypropane. For CH 3 –O–CH 2 -CH 2 -CH 3, the longer carbon chain on the right side of the oxygen is considered the base name and the shorter carbon chain on the left side of the oxygen is considered the substituent.
3.9: Ethers, Epoxides and Sulfides - Chemistry LibreTexts
Each alkyl group on each side of the oxygen is numbered separately. The numbering priority is given to the carbon closest to the oxgen. The alkoxy side (shorter side) has an "-oxy" ending with its corresponding alkyl group. For example, CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 -O-CH 2 CH 2 CH 3 is 1-propoxypentane.
