The Adoration of the Magi is an unfinished early painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo was given the commission by the Augustinian monks of San Donato in Scopeto [it] in Florence in 1481, but he departed for Milan the following year, leaving the painting unfinished.

The painting, which Leonardo undertook to finish within 30 months, had the Adoration of the Magi as its subject, i.e., the celebration of the feast of the Epiphany when, according to St Augustine, all people respond to the call of Christ.

The Adoration of the Magi is perhaps one of Leonardo da Vinci's strangest and most fertile compositions. By combining figures of pleading old men and armed horsemen, he transformed a banal biblical subject into a scene from human history.

In 1481 Leonardo was commissioned to paint an altarpiece for the Monks of San Doneto a Scopeto in Florence. The theme was the "Adoration of the Magi", and the contract required delivery of the painting within 24 months with an extension for a further 6 months if required.
