    日本刀,又称武士刀、东洋剑,是在日本诞生、发展的一种武器,其特征为细长微弯的单刃刀身,刀柄有不同材料包括不同金属、木材、鲛皮、线材、竹材等制成,通常作为“武士”的专属武器。依据形状、尺寸分为太刀、打刀、胁差、小太刀、短刀等。广义上还包括长卷、薙刀、剑、枪等。在日本制刀人被称作“刀匠”或“刀锻冶”。 另外日本对于刀剑不做区别,不论弯型直型均可称作刀或剑,与中国的分类大不相同。 早期日本刀多为直刀,随着大和王权东扩,吸收了东日本原住民虾夷所使的弯形蕨手刀的形质,同时期南北朝战乱中因贸易等流入的中国刀也在技术层面上给予其不小影响,平安时代末期的日本刀造型已和今日日本刀相差不大。镰仓中期日本刀为了战备大量制作,偶有佳作产生,便成为后世所称的名刀,同时制刀技术也开始进步。
