Gigantopithecus (/ dʒaɪˌɡæntoʊpɪˈθikəs, ˈpɪθɪkəs, dʒɪ -/ jy-gan-toh-pih-THEE-kəs, -⁠PITH-ih-kəs, jih-; [2] lit. 'giant ape') is an extinct genus of ape that lived in southern China from 2 million to approximately 300,000 to 200,000 years ago during the Early to Middle Pleistocene, represented by one species, Gigantopithecus blacki. Primates exhibit the highest levels of sexual dimorphism amongst mammals, [2] therefore the maximum body dimensions included in this list generally refer to male specimens. Mandrills and baboons are monkeys; the rest of the species on this list are apes.
