It is our mission to provide leadership on a national and state level for African American contractors who are builders and laborers who historically have not received a fair share of public and private contracting opportunities.

NAMC is proud to be a leading voice for millions of minority trade workers and an advocate for undocumented veterans in the construction industry. Of the 160 million people employed in the United States, more than 31% (50 million) earn a living in the construction industry.

Woods was an African American inventor and engineer who made numerous innovations in the fields of electricity and telecommunications during the late 19th century.

2024年2月12日 · Alexander & Repass hired both white and black workers for their projects, who worked together in mixed work crews at a time in American history when this was almost unheard of. The Tidal Basin Bridge and Seawall cost $1 million to build, and the construction employed over 160 workers.

2019年5月1日 · By the time that civil rights activists launched mass protest that shut down construction sites in the 1960’s, black tradesmen and contractors in the San Francisco Bay area had spent roughly two decades trying to compel the lily-white building trades unions to open their doors to black workers.

African Americans have had a profound impact on the construction industry through great inventions and work on many of the country’s most notable projects. Here are some individuals who paved the way as Black builders, architects, and inventors.

2023年7月7日 · Women make up 4 percent of construction trades workers, and 11 percent of the workforce overall when accounting for administrative positions. Black workers account for 7 percent of workers. When women did get hired, harassment often drove them out, impacting their ability to earn better wages.

From enslaved workers in the 19th century to agricultural, industrial, and professional workers in the 20th and 21st centuries, Black men and women have always been vital to transforming and tooling America. During Black History Month, our museum celebrates Black people's often invisible labor of all kinds — across time, industry, and community.
