Brechin Castle is a castle in Brechin, Angus, Scotland. The castle was constructed in stone during the 13th century. Most of the current building dates to the early 18th century, when extensive reconstruction was carried out by architect Alexander Edward for James Maule, 4th Earl of Panmure, between approximately 1696 and 1709. Brechin Castle stands proud on a massive bluff of rocks above the River Southesk on the site of a much older fortress belonging to the Scottish kings. The present house was last reconstructed in the early 1700′s and incorporates parts of the original Castle dating back to the 13th century.

Brechin Castle, a C18 mansion of the Maule-Ramsays possibly on site of royal castle dating to at least the C12. Brechin Castle is to all intents and purposes a mansion of the 18th century, although there has been a castle here since the 13th century.

Brechin Castle is situated on the southern edge of the town of Brechin which lies approximately 6 miles (9.5km) to the west of the town of Montrose and 20 miles (32km) north-east of Dundee. Brechin Castle is set on a rocky outcrop high above the River South Esk on its north side.

Brechin Castle is only open to the public for a short period so a visit was arranged. Heather our guide was marvellous. She brought the exhibits to life and was so very knowledgeable. The added bonus was we were able to meet Lord Dalhousie who lives in the castle. This was a spectacular venue and if only it were open longer would see many visitors.
