Choke Canyon reservoir has varied types of habitat including steep rocky banks, flooded timber, shallow brushy flats, and creek channels. Water in the lower portion of the reservoir remains fairly clear throughout the year, while the upper portion of the Frio River channel is typically stained.

Texas Parks and Wildlife operates one major park and three additional boat ramps on the shores of Choke Canyon Reservoir. The park offers campgrounds, picnic areas, overnight camping, boat ramps, a swimming area, and opportunities for shoreline fishing.

If you have a reservation, call the park office before 5pm if they will be arriving after 10 pm in order to get the gate combination. A late arrival site assignment/available campsite list is placed on the sliding glass door at park headquarters nightly for overnight campers.
