These are activity and project ideas for kids and teachers to use in your unit study of ancient Mesopotamia - Sumer, Babylon and Assyria. We teach 6th grade, but these activities can be adjusted for any grade.

In this activity, you will translate Sumerian cuneiform writing, write a message in Sumerian language, and then make up your OWN version of cuneiform to write a “coded message.” Use the cuneiform alphabet and number system on this page.

Use your highlighted, underlined, and annotated classroom copy of the Mesopotamia Cuneiform lesson to get more practice with that important skill and to answer the following additional questions.

Cuneiform was one of the first writing systems, developed 5,000 years ago in Mesopotamia to record information on clay tablets. By asking students to record current complex material on a clay tablet, they will see that information needs to be simplified and codified in order to be recorded and transmitted.

Hand out activity worksheet on translating Cuneiform. Inform students that they are now writing in an entirely new (to them) language. Using the "translation" from the back of the worksheet, have students translate the cuneiform writing on the front of their worksheet.

Here’s a version of this activity adapted for remote learning. Students will write cuneiform messages in their browser with the help of a cuneiform alphabet. They can even download their work to share or hand in!
