The P wave is the first deflection of the cardiac cycle seen on an EKG. It represents the electrical activity associated with atrial depolarization. The normal P wave is a low amplitude, vertical, rounded wave, resembling a gentle hill, which is continued immediately from the QRS complex.

Ectopic atrial rhythms occur when the impulses for the atria to beat are generated in the wrong area. This results in p waves on the electrocardiogram which differ from the normal appearance of p waves. The rate usually remains at less than 100 beats per minute.

Atrial ectopic tachycardia is caused by an aberrant focus of excitation. ECG shows an abnormal P wave axis, the morphology of which depends on the site in the atrium the focus arises. The ventricular rate can vary with accelerations and deceleration.
