Pontederia azurea is a water hyacinth from the Americas, sometimes known as anchored water hyacinth. It is the type species of Pontederia subg. Eichhornia, which was previously recognized as part of the polyphyletic genus Eichhornia. [1] It is of some interest as an aquarium plant.

Status: Eichhornia azurea is considered native to South America, Central America, Mexico, and Jamaica. It is introduced to Puerto Rico, Rankin County, Mississippi, Augusta County, Virginia, and Columbia county, FL (USDA NRCS, 2021).

Eichhornia, which includes P. azurea, P. diversifolia, P. heterosperma, and P. natans; Pontederia subg. Eichhornia is pantropical, centered in South America but with P. natans being endemic to continental Africa and Madagascar. The other three species are restricted to the Neotropics.

Neochetina eichhorniae, N. bruchi (weevils), and Niphograpta albiguttalis (moth larvae) have been used in tropical and subtropical populations. Likely can be treated similar to E. crassipes (water hyacinth) as follows: Foliar (diquat dibromide, 1-2 quarts/acre smaller plants, up to 3 qt/ac for mature plants). Frequent applications may be required.

Showy purple flowers above water surface on erect stems, 7-50 flowers per stalk. Flowers summer through fall. Coastal rivers and lakes. Only vouchered from Columbia Co, but is a Federal Noxious Weed. Good to prevent establishment.

Eichhornia azurea is a rooted perennial aquatic plant. It has long stems which grow to reach the surface of the water. It is native to parts of Central and South America. Leaves are alternate along the stem. Submersed leaves are sessile while emersed leaves are petiolate. The petiole is never inflated as with Eichhornia crassipes.
