The FIM-92 Stinger is an American man-portable air-defense system (MANPADS) that operates as an infrared homing surface-to-air missile (SAM). It can be adapted to fire from a wide variety of ground vehicles, and from helicopters and drones as the Air-to-Air Stinger (ATAS).

The stinger was designed to provide air defense capabilities to U.S. and allied troops when forward deployed and thus eliminate the immediate need for air support should an enemy aircraft threaten the troops. The FIM-92 Stinger served as a replacement to the FIM-43 Redeye.

In 1977, General Dynamics had begun full-scale development of a next-generation Stinger, designated XFIM-92B. This missile, also known as Stinger -POST (Passive Optical Seeker Technique), has a new microprocessor-controlled two-band (IR/UV) seeker head.
