Baseball’s first team of professionals finished the season with a perfect 57-0 record (although the team won more than 70 games, team captain Harry Wright only counted games against other National Association clubs as official).

The succeeding National Association of Professional Base Ball Players (NA) was then established as the first professional baseball league. In 1876 six clubs from the NA and two independents joined to create the National League (NL).
