The Wildland Firefighter Apprenticeship Program is designed to enhance and develop future leaders in wildland firefighting. As an apprentice, you’ll receive pay as you complete a 3,000 hour on-the-job training program at a residential wildland fire academy.

The Forest Service employs approximately 10,000 personnel annually who serve in various positions within our wildland fire program. Positions include wildland firefighter, dispatcher, prevention technician, fuels management, and more.

A forest firefighter prevents, controls, and suppresses fires in federal, state, and private forests. They work in various capacities under a variety of job titles including forest fire warden, forest ranger, forest ranger technician, forestry technician (fire), wildland firefighter, and forest fire inspector and prevention specialist.

Wildland firefighters are tasked with combating wildfires and preventing future fires from starting. Wildland firefighters can work 14 days straight (called a roll) with 16-hour days and possibly up to three days travel before and after the official 14. Night shifts and longer shifts of 16-24 hours are possible depending on the fire and area you are in, but not super common.
