Cliff Palace, the largest and best-preserved cliff dwelling in the U.S., is one of over 600 cliff dwellings in Mesa Verde National Park in the Four Corners area of Colorado. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mesa Verde was home to the Ancestral Puebloan people, who lived there between 450 and 1300 AD and built the cliff dwellings between 1150 and 1300.

A short, marked hiking trail winds across small washes and over slickrock before reaching an overlook of a cliff dwelling one half mile across the canyon. Interpretive signing is located at the overlook. Walk south off the overlook to view a natural bridge up the canyon.

The cliff dwellings of Butler Wash ruins are visible after a short half-mile walk from a parking spot right off the highway. Once sheltering a small community of Ancestral Pueblo people, the cliff dwellings date from the 1200s.
