A fracture zone is a linear feature on the ocean floor—often hundreds, even thousands of kilometers long—resulting from the action of offset mid-ocean ridge axis segments. They are a consequence of plate tectonics .

Major active fractures zones worldwide are in the orange shaded areas perpendicular to the black lines of the mid-ocean ridges of the major oceanic plates. Fracture zones are common features in the geology of oceanic basins. Globally most fault zones are located on divergent plate boundaries on oceanic crust.

These zones are known as transform faults and are regions of intense deformation. This deformation leaves large scars, or fracture zones, on the seafloor that stretch for hundreds to thousands of kilometers across the surface of the tectonic plates.
