2022年8月9日 · Meet Psorophora ciliata, better known as the American giant mosquito or, in delightful Southern parlance, the gallinipper, a name inspired by the gallon of blood it is said to drink.

Psorophora ciliata is a species of large mosquito indigenous to North America east of the continental divide. It is one of thirteen species of the genus that reside in the continental United States. [2] The mosquito has been referred to as the “gallinipper” or “shaggy-legged gallinipper” due to its tendency for aggressive behavior. [1]

An adult crane fly, resembling an oversized male mosquito, typically has a slender body and long, stilt-like legs that are deciduous, easily coming off the body. [12] [2] Like other insects, their wings are marked with wing interference patterns which vary among species, thus are useful for species identification. [13]
