2023年1月21日 · The history of how Egyptian pyramids lost their casing stones is a tale of physics and greed, with only the Bent Pyramid of Dahshur escaping the fate of being entirely plundered. But were the tips of the pyramids really covered in gold?

Initially standing at 146.6 metres (481 feet), the Great Pyramid was the world's tallest human-made structure for more than 3,800 years. Over time, most of the smooth white limestone casing was removed, which lowered the pyramid's height to the current 138.5 metres (454.4 ft); what is seen today is the underlying core structure.

This block is one of the few surviving casing stones from the Great Pyramid of Giza, built for King Khufu. It is the only pyramid casing stone on display outside Egypt. Khufu was the King of Egypt around 2500 BC.

During the earliest period, pyramids were constructed wholly of stone. Locally quarried limestone was the material of choice for the main body of these pyramids, while a higher quality of limestone quarried at Tura (near modern Cairo) was used for the outer casing.

In the collection of the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh is an unusual artefact; a block of limestone, roughly hewn and damaged in places, and weighing around half a metric ton. The stone is of remarkable historic and scientific significance.

Originally, the Great Pyramid of Giza was covered with 144,000 casing stones that were highly reflective as well as protective. Made of polished white Tura limestone, they reflected the sun's light and it is thought that they made the pyramid visible from space, thus the Egyptians' name for it, “Ikhet”, or glorious light.
