Did you know that green moray eels are often feared and mistaken for sea serpents? The green moray is found in the western Atlantic Ocean, from New Jersey to Bermuda, and the northern Gulf of Mexico southward to Brazil. This solitary animal hides among cracks and crevices, along rocky shorelines and in coral reefs.

Green moray eels are normally found in warm tropical and sub-tropical saltwater, hiding in rock crevices or the nooks of coral reefs during the day. The mating season runs from July to September. Fully mature female moray eels lay thousands of eggs at a spawning site during this time, but only some of the eggs will be fertilized by males.

Moray eels are fascinating, beautiful, and universally recognized fish that can make a unique and stunning addition to a marine aquarium. They are tough, disease resistant, hardy, easy to feed, and a few make excellent aquarium fish (some are even reef safe!).

This moray eel is common to the tropical Atlantic. To the west, its range extends from Florida and the Bahamas to Southern Brazil and, to the east, it can be found in the islands of Cape Verde and along the coast of Senegal. It has also been spotted in the Sea of Cortez (California).
