Harar is the capital city of the Harari Region. The ancient city is located on a hilltop in the eastern part of the country and is about 500 kilometres (310 mi) from the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa at an elevation of 1,885 metres (6,184 ft).

Formerly named Region 13, its capital is Harar, and the region covers the city and its immediate surroundings. Harari Region is the smallest regional state in Ethiopia in both land area and population. Harari and Oromo are the two official languages of the region.
