The Telescope - HubbleSite
Orbiting high above the Earth, the Hubble Space Telescope has a clear view of the universe free from the blurring and absorbing effects of the atmosphere. In addition to observing visible and near-infrared light, Hubble detects ultraviolet light, which is absorbed by the atmosphere and visible only from space.
Quick Facts - HubbleSite
Why is Hubble a space telescope? Shifting pockets of air in Earth’s atmosphere distort light from space — that’s why stars seem to twinkle when viewed from the ground. The atmosphere also blocks some wavelengths of light partially or entirely, particularly ultraviolet light.
About Us - HubbleSite
The Hubble Space Telescope is a project of international cooperation between NASA and the European Space Agency. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD., manages the telescope. The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore, MD., conducts Hubble science operations.

Servicing Missions - HubbleSite
Launched in 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope was designed for periodic servicing to keep it running smoothly and extend its life. Between 1993 and 2009, astronauts visited Hubble five times to replace limited-life items such as batteries, gyroscopes and electronic boxes, and to install state-of-the-art science instruments.
