When winter blasts its arctic forcefield, the Utah ice castles — a frozen fairytale of ice and snow — emerge on an acre of land at Soldier Hollow Nordic Center in Midway. Visitors explore intricate archways, mazes, fountains, slides and tunnels, all handcrafted from over 25 million pounds of ice and thousands of man-hours.

Frozen thrones, LED-lit sculptures, ice-carved tunnels, and slippery slides comprise the Utah Ice Castles, Midway’s famous icy annual attraction. All ages enjoy this limited-time fortress built using roughly 12,000 man-made icicles–entirely by the hands of 20 to 40 ice artists.

Once the lights kick on, the place has an entirely different feel. There is also music playing inside the castle, and the lights seem to shift with the music. We love seeing the different colors, and watching how the ice castles change when the sun goes down. Seeing the ice castles during the day is definitely different than after dark.
