The intestinal epithelium is the single cell layer that forms the luminal surface (lining) of both the small and large intestine (colon) of the gastrointestinal tract. Composed of simple columnar epithelium its main functions are absorption, and secretion.

The mucus layer and the intestinal epithelial cells represent the main determinants of the physical intestinal barrier and have a fundamental role in health. Various methods are available to evaluate the function of the intestinal barrier, but correlation of results across studies and methodologies remains difficult.
