Jacopo Peri (20 August 1561 – 12 August 1633) was an Italian composer, singer and instrumentalist of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. [1] . He wrote what is considered the first opera, the mostly lost Dafne (c. 1597), and also the earliest extant opera, Euridice (1600).

Jacopo Peri was an Italian composer noted for his contribution to the development of dramatic vocal style in early Baroque opera. Under the early sponsorship of the Florentine Cristofano Malvezzi, Peri had published by 1583 both an instrumental work and a madrigal.

Jacopo Peri, the so-called ‘inventor’ of opera, is well known to music historians. To concentrate solely on his Dafne and Euridice , however, is to present a distorted picture of this court musician.
