In the 13th century Kublai Khan, grandson of Genghis, famously crossed the Jinsha River near here, allowing the Mongol army to conquer the independent Dali Kingdom and bring this part of Yunnan under the yoke of the Yuan Dynasty, and Chinese empire, for the first time.

Jinsha or Kinsha is the upper-stream of Yangtze River and the largest river in Yunnan Province.
