The hard palate is the front portion of the roof of the mouth and is made up of bone. It is firm and provides support for the structures in the mouth. The soft palate is the back portion of the roof of the mouth and is made up of soft tissue.

Abnormal findings include yellowness or extreme pallor, and diseases include torus palatinus, cleft palate, submucous cleft palate, High-arched palate, Kaposi's sarcoma and leukoplakia. The soft palate is checked with a penlight. It should be light pink, smooth and upwardly movable.

The normal structures of the hard palate should be identified: Incisive papilla – protuberance of soft tissue lingual to the maxillary central incisors which covers the incisive foramen and normally appears redder than the surrounding tissues (Figure 28)

Inspect the color and shape of the hard and soft palates. Normal mucosa is pink with a ridged hard palate. Torus palatinus may be present, and is a variation of normal.

The hard palate (roof of the mouth) is not smooth, but has ridges, called plicae. These can be shallow or deep and are more noticeable just behind the teeth in the front of the mouth.

2022年2月11日 · Torus palatinus is a common normal variant or exostosis of the hard palate with a frequency of 0.9%–61.7% and is more common in females (15–20). Torus palatinus appears during puberty and slowly grows until the patient reaches adulthood, with the possibility of the growth continuing until the 7th decade of life.
