The International Association of Chiefs of Police provides the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics as a preface to the mission and commitment law enforcement agencies make to the public they serve.

General conduct includes the following: 1. Officers shall follow this agency’s mission and values statement, oath of honor, and code of ethics. If an officer experiences an ethical conflict with these items, they should consult a supervisor for further clarification. 2.

The primary responsibility of the police service and of the individual officer is the protection of the people of the United States through the upholding of their laws; chief among these is the Constitution of the United States and its amendments.

The code of conduct consists of ethical mandates law enforcement officers use to perform their duties. These guidelines include acting impartially; exercising discretion; using only necessary force; and maintaining confidentiality, integrity, and a professional image at all times.
