SDO is designed to help us understand the Sun's influence on Earth and Near-Earth space by studying the solar atmosphere on small scales of space and time and in many wavelengths simultaneously.

Solar physicists specialize in the study of the Sun. These scientists make detailed measurements that are possible only because the Sun is uniquely situated for close-range observation. Other stars cannot be resolved with anything like the spatial or temporal resolution that the Sun can.

The Sun is the only star we can study in detail, providing us with the opportunity to observe stellar internal structure, magnetic fields, and atmosphere. Solar and Heliospheric Observer (SOHO), a space observatory jointly operated by NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA), has been one of the best sources for that knowledge.
