An ancient market surviving headstrong in modern times, Ason Chowk is filled to the brim with a miscellany of items from fresh vegetables to spices and curios. Asan straddles one of the two legendary India-Tibet trade routes that pass through Kathmandu. Because of this history, Asan has been one of the city's main marketplaces since ancient times. Six streets converge on Asan giving the square a perpetual bustle.

At Asan, there are six roads radiating in all directions. The three-storied pagoda style Annapurna Temple of Annapurna, the Goddess of Grains, presides over the ever-lively bazaar.

As this place used to be accompanied and influenced by the traders from Tibet and India, it used to have a place for buddhist people to pray. The remains of a very old Bauddha Bihar exists in the Ason bazar area.

Six lanes converge unto Ason making it an important venue and pass-through for some of Kathmandu’s most celebrated festivals. Kathmandu’s biggest chariot festival, also known as the White Machindranath Festival takes place in April.
