Stygiomedusa - Wikipedia
Known to be one of the largest invertebrate predators in the deep sea, the giant phantom jellyfish's typical prey consists of plankton and small fish. The S. gigantea tends to be more dominant in locations with a low productivity system, which in turn deters other predatory organisms, like fish, to high productivity systems (coastal, upwelling ...

Giant phantom jelly • MBARI
Moving in for a closer look, the submersible’s lights reveal the giant phantom jelly (Stygiomedusa gigantea). The bell of this deep-sea denizen is more than one meter (3.3 feet) across and trails four ribbon-like oral (or mouth) arms that can grow to more than 10 meters (33 feet) in length.
The Medusa - NOAA Ocean Exploration
The Medusa (Figure 1) is the same stealth camera system that captured the first video of a giant squid in the deep sea. The concept behind the system is that it is unobtrusive. Submersibles and remote operated vehicles (ROVs) usually use bright white lights to penetrate the darkness and explore the depths.

26 Different Types of Jellyfish in the Ocean - Aquarium Whisperer
2024年1月21日 · The Atolla Jellyfish, also known as the Coronate Medusa, is a remarkable inhabitant of the deep sea. Characterized by a deep groove running through their bells, these jellies resemble a transparent crown. Some Atolla species display a striking deep red color, which, intriguingly, makes them appear completely black in their preferred deep-sea ...
We designed the Medusa carefully based on deep-sea animal adaptations. The low-light camera system and far-red (almost infrared) light illumination on it allow us to record bioluminescence and observe animal behavior unobtrusively. The battery pack on the Medusa allows it to record up to 30 hours of video in high definition.
The Medusa - Deep Ocean Education Project
To attract animals into the field of view of its camera, the Medusa uses either bait attached to a bar mounted in front of the camera or an optical lure like the one used during the giant squid expedition. This optical lure is also known as the electronic jellyfish (e-jelly).
