Archery has been a cornerstone of Native American culture for thousands of years, deeply intertwined with survival, spirituality, and artistry. The bow and arrow, an iconic symbol of Native American ingenuity, was not merely a weapon but a tool that shaped the history and traditions of numerous tribes across the continent.

Although archery is synonymous with the history of Native American warriors, it began on the continent relatively late and was not invented there until around 500 CE. One of the earliest areas to use it was Iowa, a region that had already been populated for around eleven thousand, five hundred years by the time Native American archery first began.

Much of what we know about Native American archery tradition and skill comes from Ishi, the last surviving member of the massacred Yahi India tribe, who came out of hiding in California in 1911 at the age of 50. Ishi’s extraordinary archery skills had some distinctly Asiatic features.
